The Haisla people have a rich history of over 9000 years. Living and working on the water has always been important to the Haisla; “we have lived off the land and water resources of the Douglas Channel and our traditional territory for hundreds of years and it will continue to be the heart of everything we do.” 

A place

Home to about half of the 1700 Haisla people, Kitamaat Village sits at the head of the Douglas Channel in British Columbia. It is a coastal community which offers the mix of amenities and services in an established centre of approximately 9,000. With economic opportunities abound and boasting many outdoor recreation options, Kitimaat offers a balanced lifestyle set with the backdrop of a majestic coastal mountain range.

Haisla Nation Council (HNC) has the vision of building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment.


The Role

To ensure the continued achievement of the HNC vision, a new opportunity as the Director, Economic Development has been created. As an action oriented and pro-active leader, you will oversee the economic activities of the HNC making certain they best serve this growing and ambitious Nation.

The Haisla Nation is located to strategically benefit from many Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) projects currently underway in the Kitimaat area. As the successful candidate, you will bring skills in commerce and economic development and ideally possess strong experience in the energy and natural resource sectors. You will excel at developing strong relationships and partnerships with external stakeholders (i.e. government, corporations, financial institutions, etc.) and will work with a forward-thinking First Nations government focused on economic development. As a results driven leader, you will develop, implement and monitor a new and prosperous direction in overall community economic development, contributing to the Nation’s strive for growth and sustainability. 

You will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and bring strong skills in negotiation, property and portfolio management, project and time management, as well as expertise in human resources, skills training and development, and finance. As a visionary leader, you will bring the critical skills to develop and define programs and policies and have the ability to take an idea through from concept to realization.

Committed and passionate about the goals and values of HNC, as the successful candidate you are an exemplary communicator that excels at consensus building. An understanding of First Nations culture and management are an asset.
