The Conscious Leader - Has Your Bicycle Had a Tune-up Recently?

Senator Larry Smith
On October 18th our firm hosted a networking breakfast in Winnipeg. We had the pleasure of hosting Senator Larry Smith, the former CFL Commissioner, former Editor for the Montreal Gazette, lawyer and marketing guru where he shared his thoughts on Leadership.

We had a wonderful turnout and the room was packed with business leaders eager to learn more about his captivating topic "The Conscious Leader". He spoke about the importance of being a self-aware individual with a strong sense of personal values and integrity, who is continually seeking to learn and improve upon existing technical, directional and interpersonal skills. The Conscious Leader is empowered, engaged and empathetic, and relates on a basis of common values and shared experiences, and thus actively contributes to the evolution and advancement of the organizational culture. With each and every interaction the Conscious Leader demonstrates a high degree of emotional logic and intelligence, in tune with their surroundings; they seek to maximize efficiency and productivity in a synergistic environment.

He illustrated the Conscious Leadership Model using a bicycle as a symbol of professional leadership and the importance of having balance to our "wheels" - that being our Power (product knowledge) on one end balanced with our Direction (people knowledge) on the other. He asked the listeners "Have you made an assessment of your product and people skills?" or "Has your bicycle had a tune-up recently". He stressed the importance of being Conscious and Competent and encouraging your team to be the same.  Senator Smith concluded by leaving us with the objective to "Build a positive management process with these 5 questions":

1. Why are we here?   2. What’s expected of me?  3. How am I doing?  4. Where do I go when I need help?  5. What’s in it for me?
