Head, Department of Native Studies

Located in the provincial capital city of Winnipeg, with a population of over 700,000, the University of Manitoba – the province’s largest university – is a uniquely comprehensive institution serving over 29,000 students in 17 Faculties and Schools and employing more than 4,700 academic staff and 3,900 support staff.

The Department of Native Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba is committed to providing an excellent and diverse Indigenous education to its students, to expanding the frontiers of knowledge through research, scholarship and creative activity, and to serving its communities through outreach and academic service. Every year the University of Manitoba welcomes more than 2,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, including more than 150 graduate students, making up one of the largest Indigenous student populations in Canada.

As the Head of Native Studies, you will work with faculty to further a vision including a 5 year living strategic plan that builds upon and enhances the diverse teaching and research interests of the Department of Native Studies. Indigenous achievement across the institution will be a priority as you work inclusively within the entire university community. You will advocate to advance the Department including its intellectual vitality and its profound contributions to the life and character of the Faculty and University. Defined by a spirit that constantly asks “How far can we go?” you will reinforce the value of its scholarship and creative activity for the understanding of the place of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the world.

Reporting to the Dean of Arts, you will be responsible for the overall leadership of the Department and for the effective use of its resources. Your demonstrated commitment to governance is evidenced by your ability to work with colleagues and articulate a shared vision.
