Senior Medical Officer

British Columbia First Nations, the Province of British Columbia (BC), and the Government of Canada have forged a new relationship and a series of precedent-setting agreements leading to the creation of a new, first of its kind, Health Authority. The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) has now taken over the administration of federal health programs and services previously delivered by Health Canada’s First Nations Inuit Health Branch – Pacific Region. They are working with the Province and First Nations across BC to address service gaps through new partnerships, closer collaboration, and health systems innovation.

Setting a unique and historical model for positive change, the FNHA’s mission is to support BC First Nations individuals, families and communities to achieve and enjoy the highest level of health and wellness by: working with them on their health and wellness journeys; honouring traditions and cultures; and championing First Nations health and wellness within the FNHA organization and with all of the FNHA’s partners.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), as a Senior Medical Officer you will work from both an overall FNHA and a region-specific perspective to promote and protect the health and wellness of BC First Nation peoples and communities.  Supporting First Nations philosophies and approaches to health and wellness, you will bring broad knowledge and experience in the areas of population health, health and wellness promotion, environmental health, health surveillance and communicable disease and management.

As a Senior Medical Officer, you will work closely with FNHA Regional Directors to advocate for First Nations in BC while ensuring sustained collaboration within diverse health systems regionally, nationally and internationally. This will include collaborating and liaising with the Office of the Provincial Health Officer and other provincial health authorities regarding the status of First Nations population health in BC
